WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — Construction on a new $12 million South Side housing development with access to health and wellness services will be completed next summer.
Ground broke on the development in August. Applications will be accepted starting next spring.
Along with the health services staffed by Christian Community Health Center, the complex will feature on-site employment services and financial counseling.
“After many years in the making, this development will transform a stretch of vacant land into a neighborhood asset that creates jobs and quality housing in our community,” said 21st Ward Ald. Howard Brookins Jr.
The Brainerd Park Apartments, 8920 S. Loomis St., will be open to families who earn at or below 60 percent of area median income, developers say. The complex will be adjacent to the Brainerd Park library and provide recreation opportunities at Brainerd Park.
The building itself will consist of 36 new units. There will be on-site management, a library and computer room, and the building will be energy-efficient.

Development partners Christian Community Health Center and Full Circle Communities participated in the groundbreaking, joined by Brookins; Anthony Simpkins, managing deputy commissioner of the city's Department of Planning and Development; local residents and civic organizations.

The building will be close to the Brainerd Park Metra station.
“Christian Community Health Center is dedicated to serving our community not only by providing quality health care and services, but also by sparking economic development,” said Kenneth Burnett, CEO of Christian Community Health Center.
Full Circle President and CEO Joshua Wilmoth said that the development will provide much needed service-rich housing.
“Our partners and the Brainerd Park community have been tremendously supportive of this development," he said.
The project is made possible through tax credit financing; a land donation from the City of Chicago; funding from The National Equity Fund; energy-efficiency funds from ComEd and Peoples Gas; and grants from The Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago.
