CHICAGO — A man was shot and a 9-year-old hurt by broken glass during an incident in Garfield Park on Thursday.

At 5 p.m., officers were in the 4200 block of West Madison Street when they saw a man get into an argument with someone and fire shots, police said. The officers "engaged" with the gunman and fired shots at him, police said.

The gunman wasn't hit, police said. He was taken into custody and officers found two guns.

Later, a man who had been shot during the incident took himself to the hospital, police said. The man's condition was not available but police said he was listed as "stable." Investigators were determining how the man was shot and said there is no information suggesting the officers who opened fire hit the man.

Police said a 9-year-old boy was also injured when gunfire struck the windows of the car the boy was in. Investigators think the car's glass window was broken and the boy injured when the gunman opened fire during the argument, police said.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The officers involved were placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident.
