RIVER NORTH — A new gym is moving into Chicago's shuttered David Barton Gym, a chain that closed a number of its locations leaving members scrambling for refunds.

The new River North Gym is expected to open next year at 600 W. Chicago Ave., general manager Chad McCleary said.

Once open, the new gym promises to be "less clubby" and "more straightforward" than its glammed up predecessor known for trendy decor.

"We're going to change the feel," McCleary said.

The new gym is the second for River North Gym, which opened in 2011 in the Merchandise Mart.

McCleary hopes that the new gym on the Chicago River will be able to offer rooftop classes as well as classes along the north branch of the Chicago River.

The new 27,000-square-foot gym will offer free weights and strength and cardio equipment as well as 45 fitness classes and personal trainers. Facilities will also include a steam room and sauna.

McCleary said that the gym is bidding out to construction firms for a multi-million dollar renovation that has yet to begin. He expects the renovation to take three to four months once it starts.

Membership costs have yet to be determined.

David Barton Gym closed most of its locations after filing for bankruptcy protection late last year.
