EAST VILLAGE —  A local police captain and two aldermen are scheduled to participate in a special public safety meeting on Thursday night hosted by neighborhood groups in East Village and Ukrainian Village.

Set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bath House Cultural Center, 1019 N. Wolcott St., the meeting was prompted by an increase in crime in the East Village, Ukrainian Village and West Town, organizers from the East Village Association and the Ukrainian Village Neighborhood Association said.

Near West Police Capt. Phil Kwasinski has agreed to speak and Aldermen Joe Moreno (1st) and Brian Hopkins (2nd), also plan to attend the meeting, organizers say.

The discussion will include personal safety tips, community crime prevention tips and advocacy to increase the police presence in the community.

In a blog post, the East Village Association asked residents to write letters "demanding urgent action on crime."

Sample letters will be available to sign at Thursday's meeting, and letters will be collected to be presented to city officials.
