COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — The man charged in this month's shooting at a Downtown Red Line station was on parole for a 2015 gun conviction at the time of the attack, court records show.

Kornell Strenger, 24, was released from prison Dec. 30, 2016, with two years left on his sentence for possession of a gun by a felon, according to state records. He was previously convicted in 2012 of attempted aggravated robbery.

Now the Auburn Gresham resident is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm following an Aug. 17 shooting at the Jackson Red Line Station.

According to police, Strenger shot a 23-year-old man in his shoulder and foot during a "targeted" shooting at the Loop train station about 7:45 p.m. Aug. 17. A witness said the shooting stemmed from a fight at Pritzker Park near Harold Washington Library; emotions boiled over at the Jackson stop.

Police said the shooting followed a nearby "verbal altercation."

The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition following the attack. Additional details about his condition were not immediately available Wednesday.

Police released surveillance images of the shooter before arresting Strenger.
