ROGERS PARK — After 26 years at 1431 W. Fargo Ave., Rogers Park 49th Ward Ald. Joe Moore and his wife are selling their home

The longtime alderman announced he was selling the single-family home in an email to residents last week to head off rumors that "would start flying" once signs were posted in his yard, said.

Moore defended the listing of the property, sent out in his personal e-mail, to Crain's by saying, "Not a penny of taxpayer dollars was spent, so I didn't see a conflict."

Moore and his wife Barbara no longer need the expansive house, he said, because one of his sons is at college and the other graduated five years ago.

Now empty-nesters, the couple is planning to move to a smaller condo a few blocks away, the alderman said.

The sellers of his new home already have accepted Moore's offer, and in the meantime his Fargo Avenue house is being showcased on the market.

One of the neighborhood's most expensive homes, the listing asks $649,900.

The Victorian-style home was built in 1906 and sits on a double, 7,000-square-foot lot, boasting four parking spaces and a spacious backyard and garden where the Moores have entertained and hosted various gatherings.

Moore said the home underwent an extensive rehab about 10 years ago, which included the addition of a custom, "Chicago-style" bar in the home's finished basement.

"The basement bar I'm very proud of," Moore said.

The home also has four bedrooms,  2½ bathrooms, an unfinished attic and a wine cellar.
