DOWNTOWN — Chance The Rapper has something cooking: chicken for charity at the new Nando's at 117 E. Lake St.

The superstar rapper from Chatham announced Tuesday that he will man the grill Sept. 5 at the new Nando's opening next to the Nutella Café at Michigan Avenue and Lake Street.

Nando's, the international chicken chain that's growing rapidly here in Chicago, said that all proceeds (minus alcohol) from Sept. 5 through Sept. 7 will go toward Chance's SocialWorks non-profit.

"We can’t think of a better ambassador to help Nando’s celebrate the Grand Opening of our flagship Chicago location, and to help support public education in a city we love," Sepanta Bagherpour, Nando's USA vice president of marketing, said in a statement.

Chance, born Chancelor Bennett, has been an active philanthropist in Chicago, most notably donating $1 million earlier this year to Chicago Public Schools. He's also given away coats to the homeless and donated backpacks to children at the Bud Billiken Parade earlier this month.

Nando's is opening the new restaurant, its 12th in Chicago, on Labor Day. The Johannesburg, South Africa, chain with more than 1,200 locations worldwide specializes in flame-grilled chicken and cheeky sides such as mashed peas.

The new Nando's on on Lake Street will feature a 21-foot-tall art piece made from 6,800 re-purposed cans from Warrenville-based brewery Two Brothers, and will be the chain's closest restaurant to Millennium Park.

The restaurant will be open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily after its Sept. 4 debut.
