CHICAGO — A woman drove into bicyclists competing in the Chicago Triathlon on Lake Shore Drive Sunday morning, police said.

At 7:26 a.m., the woman was in the 3700 block of North Lake Shore Drive when she went around the cones that marked lanes being used by bicyclists in the Chicago Triathlon, police said. The woman hit a 38-year-old man and 28-year-old woman riding their bikes in the event.

The man had head and shoulder injuries, and the woman had head, neck and shoulder injuries. They were taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where their conditions were not available but they were listed as "stable," police said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured athletes and their families," triathlon organizers wrote on Facebook. "We'd also like to thank the numerous participants who pulled up their races in order to aid the athletes in need."

The driver, a 20-year-old woman, refused medical attention. She was cited for negligent driving and operating a car without insurance, police said.
