DOWNTOWN — The iconic Clark Street Bridge has reopened after construction on the bridge was completed ahead of schedule.
Rehab on the Clark Street Bridge has been underway since February, but crews completed it 10 days early. The bridge's two lanes of traffic and sidewalks will reopen Wednesday.
“I want to thank all of the commuters who were patient during the reconstruction of the Clark Street Bridge,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement. “City crews worked tirelessly to finish the project 10 days ahead of schedule."
The project was originally scheduled to be completed by Labor Day on Sept. 4.
As part of the rehab, workers repaired the sidewalks and road decks that span the bridge, part of ongoing work by the Chicago Department of Transportation to restore or rebuild the iconic bridges that go across the Chicago River.
