Robert Thornton, 32, Dies After Austin Shooting

CHICAGO — A 32-year-old man died after being shot in Austin on Tuesday night, officials said.

At 11:45 p.m., the man was standing on the sidewalk with a group of people in the 5400 block of West Rice Street when someone in a passing car fired shots, police said.

The man was hit in his chest and right leg and he was taken to Loyola Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Robert Luther Thornton, of the 4400 block of West Maypole, was pronounced dead at 7:06 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. An autopsy showed he died from multiple gunshot wounds in a homicide.

The attackers were in a white car, police said.

No one was in custody.
