COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A speeding driver fatally hit a pedestrian in Chatham late Saturday before heading home and tearfully confessing to his brother, prosecutors said.

The two are accused of then walking four blocks to the crime scene, where 39-year-old Dominique Wilbourn lay dead, before leaving once more — without telling police what happened.

Driver Malcolm McGhee appeared Wednesday in bond court, where he was held on $90,000 bail on charges of failing to report an accident causing death.

Police tracked down McGhee and his damaged white 2003 Cadillac CTS after releasing surveillance photos of the car Sunday.

According to Assistant State's Attorney Joseph Carlson, McGhee was speeding along Cottage Grove Avenue toward 82nd Street when he fatally struck Wilbourn, who was crossing the road on a diagonal. Wilbourn was thrown into the air in front of McGhee's car, prosecutors said.

The crash was witnessed by a neighbor and documented on surveillance video, according to authorities.

McGhee is accused of driving home to the 900 block of East 84th Street, where he began crying and told his brother "that he hit someone with his car and he thinks that the person is dead," Carlson said.

That's when the pair walked to the crime scene, where a crowd had gathered, according to prosecutors. McGhee's brother said he thought he knew Wilbourn "from some time before," Carlson noted.

When police found the Cadillac, prosecutors said, they noticed chipped paint and front-end damage.

Assistant Public Defender Julie Koehler said McGhee has worked for Burger King for the past seven months. He is engaged to the mother of his two children, ages 4 and 7.

According to prosecutors, McGhee has prior convictions for drugs, assault, battery and trespassing.
