Man Dies After Being Hit By A Freight Train In Beverly

WEST BEVERLY — A man died after being struck by a freight train early Sunday morning in West Beverly.

The man was struck around 3:30 a.m. near 103rd Street and Maplewood Avenue, according to officials with CSX Transportation Inc.

Chicago police said the man was pronounced dead on the scene, and they are continuing to investigate the fatal incident. No further information was available, including the man's name.

According to sources, the death is being considered a possible suicide.

"Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragic event. Local CSX personnel are cooperating with local authorities investigating this incident," said Rob Doolittle, assistant vice president of media and communications for Jacksonville, Fla.-based CSX.

Doolittle said the train was traveling from Chicago to North Baltimore, Ohio and consisted of two locomotives and 23 train cars. As of 9:48 a.m. Sunday, normal traffic had resumed along the rail line.

CSX owns a pair of railroad lines that run through the 19th Ward, including the Elsdon Rail Line, which runs parallel to Sacramento Avenue and the Blue Island Spur Line, which runs parallel with Rockwell Street.
