BEVERLY — Residents of Beverly and Morgan Park are among the winners of the Chicago Bungalow Association's first Bungalow Garden Contest.

Eamon and Maureen Reilly of Beverly won the "Best Front Garden" category in the contest by 18 votes. Overall, 1,712 online ballots were cast in the category with the Reilly family receiving 245 votes.

Maureen Reilly is the president of the Beverly Area Planning Association. In February, she won another contest from the bungalow group — that time for the "Best Interior Rehabilitation Project" as part of the 12th annual Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Bungalow Awards.

As for the garden of her home near 99th Street and Damen Avenue, Reilly said the native plants and perennials “look better every year. They have enhanced the look of our bungalow and draw about a zillion butterflies and bees.”

A Beverly native, the Maureen Reilly moved back to the neighborhood from the East Coast with her husband three years ago. The couple have four children and are active in St. Barnabas Parish.

Joe Murphy of West Beverly is the Reilly family's landscape designer.

Dallas has been slowly building her garden for the past eight years. She said the one thing she knew from the beginning was that there would be “no grass.”

"My intention with anything I design is ‘feel.’ How does it make you feel? My garden, while being quite relaxing as a whole, has many surprises and visual treats that await the visitor who wishes to explore its nooks and crannies,” she said.

In other awards, Annie Picard of Galewood won in the category of "Best Window/Planter Boxes."

Voting for the contest was done online from July 25-28 and nearly 5,000 votes were cast. Each of the three winners receives $250. The association received 57 different submissions from members throughout Chicago.
