Former Brother Rice Teacher John 'Jay' Toole Dies

Irish Christian Brother John "Jay" Toole, 76, died Sunday. His last assignment was teaching chemistry at Brother Rich High School, where he was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame and the Circle of Champions.

MOUNT GREENWOOD — Irish Christian Brother John "Jay" Toole, 76, died Sunday. His last assignment was teaching chemistry at Brother Rich High School.

Toole was born in Chicago and entered the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1970, according to his obituary.

His first assignment was teaching science at St. Laurence High School in suburban Burbank. Toole also served at St. John’s Indian Mission outside of Phoenix, Arizona.

He was a principal at O’Dea High School in Seattle and taught both physics and chemistry at Leo High School in Auburn Gresham too.

At Brother Rice, Toole served as a moderator of both the football and volleyball teams. He also worked with the Alumni Dads’ Club. He is a member of both the Catholic school's Hall of Fame and the Circle of Champions.

Toole is preceded in death by both of his parents and his brother. He leaves behind his sister-in-law, a niece and her husband.

Visitation begins at 9 a.m. today and will continue until a Mass at 1 p.m. at the Brother Rice's chapel at 10001 S. Pulaski Road in Mount Greenwood. Toole will be buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip.
