CHICAGO — A Chicago Fire Department truck's windshield was hit by a bullet after firefighters arrived at a crash in South Shore, police said.
At 2:23 a.m. Thursday, Fire Department officials went to a two-car accident at 79th Street and Yates Boulevard, police said. Two people who were involved in the crash got into an argument, and one of them called a man to the crash scene.
The man went to his car, took out a gun and fired shots into the crowd, police said. One of the shots hit the windshield of a Fire Department truck.
The gunman was taken into custody with charges pending, police said, and a gun was found.
Witness Lamon Reccord said he feels sorry for the firefighters.
“As far as Chicago police officers, they’re putting their lives on the line every day, so they expect that," he told CBS2. "But a fireman coming out to help a car crash, and they’re getting shot? That speaks to a different narrative about how people are thinking with guns.”
One firefighter suffered a minor cut on his nose from flying glass, and the injury was treated with a Band-Aid, said Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
Everyone "went home OK," Langford said, and the windshield will be repaired.
