DOWNTOWN — Storms that will start up Friday afternoon could drop at least another inch of rain on the city.

There's a 100 percent chance of rain Friday, said Amy Seeley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, with the storms expected to start in the afternoon and last until Saturday morning. Even more rain is possible Saturday afternoon.

Late Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued this warning:

A flash flood watch will be in effect in the city 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, with the National Weather Service warning multiple thunderstorms with heavy rainfall will sweep through the area. Those storms could "exacerbate" flooding that's already hit the city's suburbs.

The storms could also come up with wind gusts up to 70 mph and quarter-sized hail, according to the National Weather Service.

The heaviest rainfall is expected to come Saturday morning, Seeley said. The National Weather Service said 1 inch of rain per hour could fall on the city during the storms.

About 5.35 inches of rain have fallen on the city this July, Seeley said. That's already 3.12 inches above what's normal for the month (but not close to our record of 11.15 inches in July 2011).

Temperatures Friday should hit 84 degrees along the lakefront and be in the upper 80s further west in the city, Seeley said.
