DOWNTOWN — The city could see flooding after heavy storms kicked up Wednesday night.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The advisory warned drivers to turn around when facing flooded streets and noted the rainfall could cause flooding on highways, streets and underpasses and in streams and low-lying areas.
The advisory is in effect until 9:15 a.m. as heavy rain pounded the city Thursday morning. The storm was expected to "move quickly through" the area, according to the National Weather Service, but storms from Wednesday night and earlier Thursday had already dropped enough rain to "saturate" the ground.
There's a limited chance of hail — up to a half-dollar is size — and a chance for 60 mph wind gusts and excessive heat, according to the National Weather Service.
Thunderstorms should end by mid- to late morning, but more storms were possible Thursday afternoon and night, according to the National Weather Service. Even more storms are expected on Friday and Saturday.
