Wicker Park Carjacking Captured On Home Security Video

By Alisa Hauser | July 11, 2017 2:10pm

WICKER PARK — A home security camera captured a carjacking in front of a Wicker Park apartment building Friday night.

The incident happened at 11:46 p.m. Friday, in the 1700 block of West Julian Street, according to Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

About 30 seconds into the video, two people get out of a 2017 Honda sedan and the driver can be heard locking the doors with a key fob.

Then, a man runs toward the victims, followed by another man. At least one of the men has a gun drawn, and he points it as he demands the car keys and shouts at the vehicle's owner and passenger, who quickly run from the scene.

Estrada said the two men were armed and demanded the car keys to the victims' car, as well as numerous personal items. The carjackers drove off in the stolen vehicle, headed west on Julian Street. A third man "acted as a lookout" and also went west on Julian, driving an unknown vehicle, Estrada said.

Estrada said that neither of the two victims, ages 24 and 26, was seriously injured.

No one is in custody, and Area North detectives are investigating, Estrada said.

Residents were alarmed by the crime.

"Very scary carjacking took place in front of our building. ... Be very careful everyone, and let's keep an eye out for each other," said a resident who alerted neighbors Sunday on Everyblock.com.
