CHICAGO — A 50-year-old man was shot to death in Avalon Park early Tuesday, police said.

At 3:17 a.m., the man was standing in a gas station parking lot in the 8300 block of South Stony Island Avenue, talking to a driver of a minivan, when a man walked up to him, police said. The man forced the 50-year-old into the mini-van and tried to take the victim's cellphone.

The man fired shots, hitting the 50-year-old in his chest, back and right arm, police said. The victim was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
