LINCOLN PARK — After an official groundbreaking two months ago, construction begins in earnest Tuesday on the Lincoln Common.

Hines McCaffrey Interests released a construction update Monday stating that excavation would begin on the former site of Children's Memorial Hospital at 2300 N. Lincoln Ave. on Tuesday and continue into August.

At the same time, drilling caissons for the foundations of the multiple buildings on the site will begin next week, according to the update, and continue into middle or late August.

Set for completion late next year or early in 2019, the massive Lincoln Common complex will include 540 units, 60 low-rise condominiums and 160,000 square feet of retail space, as well as an acre of open space accessible to the general public.

Ald. Michele Smith (43rd) has called it "the new crossroads of Lincoln Park," and it's expected to anchor new development at one end of a stretch on Lincoln, with Elevate Lincoln Park at the northern end near Wrightwood Avenue, and with two new apartment buildings at Lincoln and Montana Street in between.
