CHICAGO — An officer fatally shot a man who fired at police in Belmont Cragin late Sunday morning, police said.

At 11:04 a.m., a woman walked into the Grand Central Police District station and told officers that a family member was armed inside a home in the 2700 block of North LeClaire Avenue, and that "she feared for the safety of her family in that residence," according to a Chicago Police statement issued Sunday afternoon.

Deputy Chief Al Nagode told reporters at the scene that the suspect's parents had gone to the station and that the suspect was holding a woman and child against their will.

The woman, identified as the suspect's girlfriend, and the child were able to get out, but the man barricaded in the home.

“While SWAT was responding, the subject — without provocation — came out of the house and fired a shot at our officers,” Nagode said.

The man ran away, ending up on a roof and then dropping into a gangway where his gun went off in the 5000 block of West Wolfram Street. He then shot at officers again, Nagode said.

An officer then shot the man, police said.

Brayant Alvarez, 24, of the 2400 block of North LeClaire, was pronounced dead on the way to Community First Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Alvarez was pronounced dead at 11:49 a.m., and an autopsy showed he died from multiple gunshot wounds.

No officers were hurt, police said.

A neighbor, Gilberto Morales, recorded the incident with his cellphone.

“All of a sudden, I heard one shot, pop, then after that, I heard several more shots like two or three: pop, pop, pop," Morales told WGN-TV. "I had jumped behind the stairs, in case the guy comes out running or the police shoot the wrong way, you never know what can go wrong.

"When they told me the guy had passed away, it's sad. Our city is so full of violence," he said.

The shooting is under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority, and any officers involved in the incident will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days.
