WEST TOWN — There is a new Farmers Market serving West Town, courtesy of a local hospital which is "using food as medicine to help improve the health outcomes for our community residents," according to a spokesman from Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center.

The twice-monthly farmers market runs from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of the month, next to the Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center campus at 2333 W. Division St. — at the corner of Oakley Avenue and Division Street.

The market is scheduled to end on Dec. 21; in October, it will move indoors to the gym at the Nazareth Family Center, 1127 N. Oakley Boulevard.

Each week, the market features 10 to 15 vendors selling locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, local organic meat, farm fresh eggs, fresh baked bread and pastries and organic local raw honey, said Tim Nelson, a hospital spokesman.

Here is the schedule for the rest of the year.

•         Thursday, July 6
•        Thursday, July 20
•       Thursday, Aug. 3
•         Thursday, Aug. 17
•         Thursday, Sept. 7
•         Thursday, Sept. 21
•        Thursday, Oct. 5
•         Thursday, Oct. 19
•         Thursday, Nov. 2
•         Thursday, Nov. 16
•         Thursday, Dec. 7
•         Thursday, Dec. 21

Nelson said the impetus for the new market came about after  "Community Visioning sessions" in the fall of 2015, when neighbors and community partners talked about a need for a farmers market to "reduce food insecurity and improve access to healthy, fresh foods in West Town."

In addition to vendors, there are live cooking demonstrations and health screenings by medical center clinicians at each market. The market accepts LINK, cash or credit cards.
