LAKEVIEW — If you're gearing up for the Fourth of July and ready for some fun this weekend, Lakeview is the place to be.

The Music Box Theatre is rolling out its 70mm Film Festival, and a new street fest will debut on Lincoln Avenue.

Get the skinny:

Music Box Theatre 70mm Film Festival: OK vinyl hipsters, it's time to up your game: The 70mm Film Festival at Music Box Theatre, 3755 N. Southport Ave., is the perfect chance to up your vintage cool cred. There are many benefits to watching a 70mm movie, which is larger in size and has a wider ratio than the standard 35mm. Some liken the heightened picture quality to watching a movie on Blu-ray versus DVD.

In recent years, the format has captured a niche market, with filmmakers using the more costly and heavy film for movies like "Interstellar" and "The Hateful Eight." But 70mm films go as far back as classic films like "West Side Story" and "Ben-Hur."

The Music Box Theatre has selected the best of both old and new 70mm films for its fifth 70mm Film Fest, and this first of three weeks starts off with a bang. Catch "2001: A Space Odyssey" in seven screenings over the weekend (and continuing into the upcoming week).

The theater has commissioned a new DTS print of the film, which is a big-screen must-see for those who weren't around when the sci-fi masterpiece debuted in 1968.

For the kids (and the young-and-heart '90s kids), there's "Hook," which plays at noon Saturday and Sunday. Starring Robin Williams as an adult Peter Pan, the Steven Spielberg flick follows Pan as he returns to Neverland to save his children from Dustin Hoffman's Captain Hook.

Tickets to "2001: A Space Odyssey" are $14, or $11 for Music Box members and children. All other titles in the fest are $12, or $9 for members and kids.

For the true cinephiles, get a festival pass for $75.

Headlining the two-day fest are Minneapolis synth-pop band Policia and Denver funk band The Motet. Other acts include Chicano Batman, Elliot Moss, Turkuaz, Aqueous and The Tomorrow People. Listen to a Spotify playlist of the bands here.

Brought to Lakeview by the organizers of the Taste of Randolph, Live on Lincoln will run from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Lincoln and Belmont, 3200 N. Lincoln Ave.

Vendors will also line the streets, and the Wark 47 farmers market will be nearby at Marshfield and Lincoln. Tickets are $10 and benefit West Lakeview Neighbors.
