Woman, 45, Killed In Englewood Crash Caused By Driver Fleeing Police

CHICAGO — One woman was dead after a crash caused by a driver fleeing officers in Englewood early Saturday morning, police said.

At 1:05 a.m., officers on patrol heard what sounded like gunshots and went ot the 5700 block of South LaSalle Street, where they saw a white Kia SUV driving out of an alley, police said. Officers stopped the car and asked a passenger, 29-year-old Richard Johnson, to get out.

Johnson got out, but the driver of the Kia started to drive away and hit a Ford Focus in the 5900 block of South Lasalle Street, police said.

The driver of the Kia, a man, got out and ran away, police said. A 21-year-old woman who was in the car was detained and taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition.

The driver of the Ford Focus that was hit, a 45-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 21-year-old woman who was a passenger was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was not available but she was listed as "stable," police said.

Officers found ammunition inside the Kia SUV and Johnson was charged with possession of ammunition without a FOID. The 21-year-old woman who had been detained from the Kia was released without being charged.

A handgun was also found in the Kia, police said.

An investigation was ongoing.
