BEVERLY — Treadfit will host a strength training class for runners at 9 a.m. Friday at Beverly Park. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat.

The free class at 2460 W. 102nd St. in Beverly is part of the 19th Ward Healthy Summer Campaign. The month-long series of seminars and fitness classes aim to encourage wellness as well as showcase area parks, neighborhood fitness studios and others.

Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th) is behind the effort, which he believes could become an annual series of events. All of the events are free and will be held weather permitting.

"I feel like there is so much going on with people trying to get fit, and we [in the 19th Ward] have so many different options," said O'Shea, adding that Southtown Health Foods and the Beverly Area Planning Association will provide free smoothies at all of the outdoor workout sessions.

Here's a list of the remaining events included in the campaign:

• At 9 a.m. Sunday, Fit Code will host a metabolic core conditioning session at Prospect Gardens Park at 10940 S. Prospect Ave. in Morgan Park.

• At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Smith Village will host a healthy cooking demonstration with Chef Gautham Rao at the retirement community at 2340 W. 113th Place in Morgan Park. Participants will learn to make Greek pork chops, roasted vegetables and a wheat salad.

• At 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday as well as 7 a.m. every Saturday Running Excels hosts a running club that leaves from the store at 10328 S. Western Ave. in Beverly.
