CHICAGO — A teenager identified as Tiara Viramontes died after she was shot in Garfield Park early Sunday, officials said.

At 4:48 a.m., a 17-year-old and 30-year-old man were in the back of a building in the 3500 block of West Huron Street when several people fired shots at them, police said.

The teenager was hit in the back of her head and the older man was hit in his upper right leg. They were taken to Stroger Hospital, where they were in critical condition, police said.

Viramontes, 17, of the same block where she was shot, was pronounced dead at 5:24 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. An autopsy showed she died from a gunshot wound in her head in a homicide.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Viramontes' family pay for her funeral. The teen went to Marine Leadership Academy and was a basketball and softball player, according to the campaign.

"Tiara was very full of life and if you ever met her you wouldn't forget her," Viramontes' mother wrote on GoFundMe. "It's so unbelievable, so shocking, no words could describe what I have been faced with."

"I will miss you always, baby girl!" she added.

The fund has raised more than $5,900 in one day.

No one was in custody.
