CHICAGO — A huge fire in a 100-foot by 100-foot vacant building forced firefighters into defensive mode as the building's roof collapsed.

No firefighters were hurt, but they did find an injured 46-year-old man outside the building near Homan and Grand.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, police said. Officials were not sure if he was inside or outside the building during the fire.

About 4 a.m., Chicago Fire officials were called to the scene and they found heavy fire, said spokesman Juan Hernandez.

The blaze was put out by 6 a.m., Hernandez said.
