COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man was shot dead in Englewood after telling the gunman "not to disrespect his sister," prosecutors said Wednesday.

Trevor Robinson, 23, is charged with first-degree murder.

According to prosecutors, Robinson was with two other men in the 6100 block of South Throop Street about 11:45 a.m. June 3 when one of the men began yelling obscenities at Novajah Ringgold's sister.

Ringgold, 22, intervened, telling the man "not to disrespect his sister," Assistant State's Attorney Jamie Santini said during a bond hearing Wednesday.

The man apologized and shook Ringgold's hand, prosecutors said, seemingly ending the altercation.

But moments later, Robinson began yelling obscenities at another one of Ringgold's sisters, according to Santini. When Ringgold stepped in and asked Robinson not to disrespect that sister, prosecutors said, Robinson pulled out a gun and opened fire — shooting Ringgold in his body multiple times.

At that point, one of Robinson's accomplices also pulled out a gun and shot Ringgold, prosecutors said. The two gunmen then ran away.

Ringgold, of the same block where he was shot, was taken to Advocate Christ Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:37 p.m. June 3, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

One of the witnesses identified Robinson as the shooter, prosecutors said. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was placed into custody Monday.

Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on Wednesday set bail for Robinson, of the 11700 block of South Wentworth Avenue, at $2 million.
