EDGEWATER — With so far no promising signs of the precious baby cow statue that went missing from Steve Satek and Dean Hervochon's Edgewater home last weekend, the pair have decided to take the bull by the horns and raise money for a new one.

The couple set up a "Chicago Cow Fund" on GoFundMe in an effort to raise $1,000, which would go to buy a replacement calf. If donations exceed the goal, the rest will be donated to animal welfare organization PAWS.

By Thursday afternoon, the campaign had raised $260 from supporters who left encouraging messages for the bovine monument.

"We love you, baby calf!" wrote one encouraging woman who offered the couple $50.

DNAinfo first reported Monday the story of devastated Far North Side residents who were shocked — some to the point of tears — to learn the beloved statue had been taken.

The fiberglass cow ornament was part of a set, which also includes a larger "mother" cow, that is chained to a nearby tree.

Hervochon bought the cattle about eight years ago at an auction in Michigan, and after installing them on the parkway next to the couple's home the black-and-white pair quickly became a hit with neighbors of all ages.

Satek said someone had cut through the cords locking the calf to the tree sometime between midnight-7 a.m. on Sunday.
