Automatic Voter Registration Will Add Thousands To Rolls, Official Says

By Tanveer Ali | June 8, 2017 5:34am

CHICAGO — A spokesman for the city's top election agency said a bill that would automatically register Illinois residents to vote will increase voter rolls across the city.

Both houses in the state Legislature unanimously passed a bill that would automatically add an eligible resident to a voter list whenever dealing with state agencies like the Secretary of State or Department of Employment Security.

"We know the numbers will change and improve in each ward, but it is impossible to project where and how much," said Jim Allen, spokesman for the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. "Each ward's increase will vary based on how many people there are eligible (18 years old and U.S. citizens) and how many people have moved."
