UPTOWN — The reasons behind the abrupt closure of 42 Grams were not financial, according to a note posted on the restaurant's website from General Manager Alexa Welsh.

The fine dining establishment at 4662 N. Broadway announced its closure over the weekend.

"To anyone speculating that people need to support their fine dining establishments more, we are not closing for financial reasons," said the note from Welsh. "Chicago is (and will continue to be) an amazing food destination supported by people from all over the world."

"A huge thank you to all our past guests and supporters, you were our biggest champions along the way and that did not go unnoticed. To all the well wishers and concerned parties, thank you so much for your emails and text messages."

The note explains that refunds will be given to patrons with reservations through July. "Please bear with me as I juggle so many moving pieces," she said.

Chef Jake Bickelhaupt and his then-wife Welsh opened 42 Grams in the former Chester's Chicken space in 2014 hoping to change the perception of the neighborhood.
