COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man charged with shooting a Chicago Police officer Saturday tackled the victim's partner before being arrested, prosecutors said in court Tuesday.

Dashonn Maggette, 32, was denied bail Tuesday on charges of aggravated battery to a police officer and attempting to murder a police officer.

The incident unfolded shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday when two uniformed officers on routine patrol spotted Maggette drinking alcohol outside near 81st Street and Maryland Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood, Assistant State's Attorney Joseph Carlson said in court.

When the officers approached Maggette, he ran into a nearby apartment building and up several flights of stairs, prosecutors said.

At the top, there was no exit.

Maggette quickly turned around and dashed back toward the officers, who spotted a gun tucked inside Maggette's waistband, Carlson said. As both officers struggled with Maggette on the staircase, the man grabbed his gun and fired a single shot — shooting one of the officers in his hand, prosecutors said.

The man's partner pulled his own gun and shot Maggette three times in his right arm and body, according to authorities.

At that point, Carlson said, Maggette jumped on that officer's back and tried to tackle him near the vestibule of the apartment building. Maggette made it outside, where he was soon arrested and taken to a local hospital for his gunshot wounds.

Maggette, of the 7700 block of South Prairie Avenue, was still hospitalized Tuesday.

The officer who'd been shot required surgery at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to prosecutors. The man was "bleeding profusely," and the bullet shattered the bones in his hand.

Carlson said the victim will require additional surgery.

Police on the scene found a 9-mm handgun loaded with five live rounds; there was one cartridge case in the barrel.

At the time of the shooting, Maggette was on parole for a 2016 drug case. He previously served time in prison for attempted murder and aggravated battery, state records show.
