CHICAGO — Dashonn Maggette, a convicted felon on parole, was charged in the shooting of a police officer Saturday.

Maggette, 31, of the 7700 block of South Prairie Avenue, was charged with attempted first degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, police said.

At 11:07 p.m. Saturday, officers on patrol in the 8100 block of South Maryland saw Maggette drinking alcohol on the sidewalk, police said. The officers got out of their car to investigate and Maggette ran into a building as the officers came up to him.

The officers followed Maggette, who had a weapon, into the building, where a struggle ensued, police said. During the struggle, Maggette allegedly shot one of the officers in the hand.

The officer's partner then fired at Maggette, police said. Maggette was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, according to the Tribune.

The officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition, police said.

The shooting is under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority, and any officers involved in the incident will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days.

According to the Illinois Department of Corrections website, Maggette has served time in prison for attempted murder, aggravated battery and possession of a controlled substance. He was most recently released from prison on May 12.
