CHICAGO — Two separate shootings on the Near West Side left two men dead and another wounded early Sunday, police said.

• At 3:14 a.m., officers responding to a call of shots fired found a 41-year-old man was found unresponsive in an empty lot in the 1800 block of West Maypole Avenue on the Near West Side, police said. The man had been shot in his head and chest.

The man was pronounced dead, police said.

The man was a documented gang member, a police source said.

The Sun-Times identified the victim as Edward Mason, 41, the father of three.

A neighbor told the paper said he and his wife were lying in bed when they heard the gunshots. "I'd say 'duck' is an understatement. My wife grabbed me and I rolled on the floor with her."

No further information was immediately available.

• At 3 a.m., two men were standing on the sidewalk in the 200 block of North Leavitt Street on the Near West Side when someone fired shots at them, police said.

A 33-year-old man was hit multiple times in his back and his leg and he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A 34-year-old man was hit in his right leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital. His condition was not available but police said he was listed as "stable."

No one was in custody.
