EDGEWATER — Edgewater's newest sweet spot will open Thursday, complete with customizable ice cream bars, dipped ice cream sandwiches and homemade paletas.

Gordo's Homemade Ice Cream Bars is the dessert complement to Flaco's Tacos at 1120 W. Granville Ave. and unlike Flaco's (which in Spanish means "skinny"), Gordo's (meaning "fat") offers indulgent treats for those seeking a post-taco snack.

“'Gordito' is also a term of endearment," owner Ed Hebson said.

With items starting at $3.95, customers can choose from a frozen ice cream bar base of flavors including coffee, dulce de leche, mango and cantaloupe, or classics like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, Oreo, mint chip and butter pecan.

Not a fan of dairy? No problem. For $2.95 Gordo's also serves up homemade paletas, a type of creamy popsicle, in creative varieties like avocado banana, hibiscus tea and orange chili spice.

From there, an extra dollar will get your bar wholly dipped in caramel, dark, milk or white chocolate and then rolled in crunchy toppings such as Fruity Pebbles and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereals, chopped and salted nuts, candy bar pieces, mini-chocolate chips, cookies and more.

The shop, which will share a split storefront under the Granville "L" tracks, also created a number of specialty house bars, such as the decadent Dark Night for $4.95, which layers dark chocolate, Heath bar and a white chocolate drizzle atop a chocolate ice cream bar the sweetly named Abuelita, consisting of a chocolate ice cream bar dipped in a white chocolate shell and topped with Cinnamon Toast Crunch and a white chocolate drizzle.

The massive Gordo's Super Sandwich for $5.45 takes a vanilla ice cream cookie sandwich and submerges it in milk chocolate before coating the confection in chopped candy bars.

Other dessert favorites like chocolate-dripped bananas, churros, cupcakes, cookies and brownies will also be available. A coffee bar will be added later.

Despite their decadence, Hebson said the bars top out at 300 calories.

By the end of June, another Gordo's is expected to open in Printer's Row at 729 S. Dearborn St.
