CHICAGO — Police are urging residents to be cautious after a man tried to lure a 13-year-old girl into his SUV as she walked to school Monday morning.

The incident happened about 7:35 a.m. Monday in the 4000 block of West Jackson Boulevard, police said in a community alert Tuesday.

A man in his 30s repeatedly yelled at the girl, saying, "Hey, I'm trying to holler at you. Get in the car and I will take you where you need to go," according to authorities.

The girl ignored the man, who soon got out of his blue SUV and approached the girl, police said. The girl then ran to school, where she told teachers what had happened.

Police said the girl spotted the same man the following morning at the same time in the same location.

He is described as a black man in his 30s who weighs roughly 160 to 180 pounds and is believed to be 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10. The man had dreadlocks.

Police are urging parents to identify "safe havens," such as trusted businesses or neighbors, along their children's routes to school. Detectives said children should not walk alone.

Anyone with information about the luring is asked to call police at 312-744-8266 and mention alert No. JA274124.
