SOUTH SHORE — The May 5th Ward meeting will be packed with news about a new grocery store and major plans for 71st Street.

Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) is set to spend much of the 6 p.m. meeting Tuesday at Bryn Mawr Community Church, 7000 S. Jeffery Blvd., talking about plans for a new grocery store and her plant to change the zoning on much of 71st Street.

Last week, Shop ‘N Save announced a lease in Jeffery Plaza, 2101 E. 71st St., after a three-year search to find a grocer to fill the last of the spaces left empty when Dominick’s decided to close all its stores in 2012.

Details of the new store will be presented at the meeting, as well as more on the 71st Street zoning changes.

Hairston is currently considering a plan to rezone much of 71st Street east of Stony Island Avenue to residential. She said recently the idea is not to replace stores with housing but to provide the alderman a way to limit the number of convenience stores, beauty shops and other businesses on the street. Some groups have worried desirable businesses will choose to locate elsewhere when presented with the added hurdle of having to get a zoning change.

Hairston always includes a time during the meeting where she answers constituents questions, and there are likely to be many at Tuesday night's meeting.
