EDGEWATER — An "extremely rare" unit in one of Edgewater's most iconic buildings is for sale — but it will probably go fast.

The 1,400-square-foot dwelling is found on the second floor of the stunning Edgewater Beach Apartments building, 5555 N. Sheridan Road. The bold 20-story structure was built in 1928 in a shade of "sunset pink" as a complement to the former Edgewater Beach Hotel's "sunrise yellow."

The unit, which went on the market on Sunday, is for sale for $259,000.

But, as real estate website Redfin warns: "There is a 70 percent chance this home will sell in the next 12 days — go tour it soon."

Though the building often has units for sale, Unit No. 126 offers something no other home in the property does: a spacious 484-square-foot private balcony overlooking Sheridan Road that can fit a living room set as well as a dining room set for eight people, "as if [it were] a backyard in the city," the listing says.

Only three other condos come with private balconies, but this is the largest, according to the listing.

The two-bedroom, two bathroom corner layout boasts "windows galore" that "pour in sunlight all day long" into the large vintage unit. Features include a fully-equipped kitchen with wet bar and Quartz counter tops, as well as an extra den.

A mix of old and new, the home has many updated original details, such as the refinished hardwood floors, original bathroom faucets and sink and a re-glaze of the original cast iron bathtub.

In September 2015, the unit sold for significantly less at just $117,500 as a one-bedroom with one bathroom, but in recent years was it combined with another end condo to add on the balcony, plus several other rooms.

The building is a co-op, and homeowners association fees run $1,163 per month.

The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Chicago landmark, and is also included in the Bryn Mawr Historic District.

The massive X-shaped building sits as a crown jewel atop Lake Shore Drive and features finely-pruned hedges, a large outdoor terrace, expansive back yard, ground-floor retail, vintage swimming pool, fitness area, small library and an impressive, ornate front lobby.
