CHICAGO — Tromaine Bell, 42, has died more than 15 years after being shot in Back of the Yards, police said.
At 10:30 p.m. Oct. 27, 2001, the man was in the 1100 block of West 51st Street when he was shot in his torso, said Michelle Tannehill, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.
Bell was walking out of a store with his kids when that gunfire started, according to the Daily Southtown. Bell went to put his kids in his car but a bullet hit his back, paralyzing him.
Bell survived for several years, giving anti-violence speeches, according to the Chicago Tribune. He was most recently living in suburban Burbank.
Bell died 6:32 p.m. Feb. 11, 2017, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. An autopsy recently concluded he had died from complications of a remote gunshot wound in his torso.
Bell's death was ruled a homicide.
