MOUNT GREENWOOD — Saint Xavier University will host a panel discussion called "Beyond Color Lines” at 6 p.m. today on its main campus in Mount Greenwood.

The free event is open to the public and will be held in the university's Warde Academic Center at 3700 W. 103rd St. The discussion is funded by the Arthur J. Schmitt Foundation and has been coordinated by 11 students in the Schmitt Scholars Program.

The discussion will address how racial and social inequalities sustain a system of oppression as well as how the immigration climate has changed as part of the recent political transition.

Three professors will each conduct five-minute presentations, followed by an open forum. They are:

• Forrest Perry, an associate professor of philosophy, who will discuss how racial inequality is contingent upon social inequalities and how it sustains the system of oppression based on race.

Amanda Lopez, an associate professor of history, will discuss the issue of immigration in present day as well as the American citizenship process.

Karen Benjamin, associate professor of history and social science education coordinator, will address her personal experience of becoming an activist and how participation in social movements has evolved throughout her life.
