BEVERLY — A panel of experts will offer suggestions on how to best use the Dan Ryan Woods in Beverly to teach others about nature.

The Forest Preserves of Cook County is behind the effort that's planned from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. April 27 in the pavilion of the sprawling nature preserve at 83rd Street and Western Avenue.

The group's Department of Conservation and Experiential Programming has organized the workshop that will include four different presenters. Each will speak about the benefits of nature as it relates to physical health, behavioral health, potential career paths and science, technology, engineering and math (or STEM) education initiatives.

The event called “Moving Forward to Engage Communities in a Meaningful Nature Experience” will also share various programming ideas that relies on the Far Southwest Side nature preserve.

During the event:

• Terry Horton of Northwestern University will give a presentation called “Nature Smart: A path to improved health and behavior.”

• Sue Gasper of the University of Illinois Extension will discuss education practices and possibilities at the Dan Ryan Woods.

Alumni from the Forest Preserve's Youth Outdoor Ambassador program will speak about youth development and various career opportunities.

The event will conclude with a question-and-answer session, an outdoor activity, lunch and an open discussion.

Attendees are encouraged dress casually, and all participants will receive a backpack containing various programming notes. For more information, email nina.baki@cookcountyil.gov or call 312-590-6361.
