DOWNTOWN — Five cars have been stolen on and near the Magnificent Mile within the past 10 days, police say. Two had been left unlocked and one had been left running.

Police reported Tuesday night the rash of recent car thefts near Chicago's premier shopping strip. Police said the suspects are working in a group of four, and in two of the thefts they stole unlocked cars out of Downtown parking garages. Two other cars were stolen while locked and legally parked on the street, while another had been left running, police said.

All of the thefts occurred at night or in the early morning.

Police said the cars were reported stolen:

• At 9:30 p.m. March 27 in the first block of East Grand Avenue

• At 8:45 p.m. March 28 in the 400 block of East Ohio Street

• In the late evening or early morning March 29 in the 500 block of North Michigan Avenue

• At 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the 100 block of East Huron Street

• At 2:10 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of East North Water Street

Police data and Tuesday's news release show 16 cars have been reported stolen so far this year in the police beat bounded by the Chicago River, Lake Michigan, State and Superior streets. Police reported 10 car thefts during the same period in 2016 in the area.

Anyone with information on the crimes is asked to call police at 312-747-8382.
