CHICAGO — White Sox fans converged on Guaranteed Rate Field on Monday to welcome a new season only to have Opening Day canceled on account of rain.

Opening Day was rescheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday. Gates to the ballpark will open at 11:40 a.m.

Parking in all Sox lots will be free.

For those holding tickets from Monday, the Sox had this offer:

Here's the forecast from ABC7:

Ahead of Monday's game, the prospects of a canceled game didn't deter some fans.

"Today's a holiday for my kids," Matthias Jucha of Bridgeport said about bringing his family to the game, including sons Toni and Angelo, 8 and 5, despite it being a school day. "I wouldn't be doing my job as a father if I didn't raise them as true White Sox fans."

He said he would consider taking his kids out of school for the rescheduled game Tuesday.

Many other White Sox fans have made Opening Day a tradition for decades.

Among them were Joe LeCompte of suburban Oak Lawn, who was tailgating outside the ballpark with friends on Monday. He said he's been coming to White Sox Opening Day for 30 years.

"Opening Day is sometimes rough and this one is rough," LeCompte said. "But I'll keep coming. I've been coming here since skipping school my sophomore year of high school."

The rain tarp remained on the field after the 3:10 p.m. scheduled start against the Detroit Tigers. The grounds crew started removing it about 20 minutes after.

Last year, the White Sox came in fourth in the American League Central division with a 78 win and 84 loss record.

After the season, the ballpark got a new name. U.S. Cellular Field was no more and in came Guaranteed Rate Field.

Last week, the White Sox unveiled new food and features at the ballpark. Among them was the "Craft Kave" which replaces the old Bullpen Bar and offers 75 beers along with several decadent burgers.

The Sox said tickets to Monday's game would be honored for Tuesday's game. In addition, all fans who had tickets to Monday's game — used or unused — can get a free ticket to a future Sox game (with the exception of some prime series) as a token of appreciation, the team said.
