CHICAGO — What's better than Portillo's chocolate cake?

The local chain known for Chicago-style hot dogs and Italian beefs will sell 54-cent slices of its decadent chocolate cake in honor of Portillo's 54th anniversary April 6.  The promotion will be available at all Portillo's restaurants while supplies last.

Dick Portillo spent $1,100 in 1963 to open his first hot dog stand in suburban Villa Park. That stand, which Portillo called "The Dog House," has since grown into 47 Portillo's restaurants across the country, including one in River North and another in the South Loop.

“We would not be here without two important ingredients — our founder, Dick Portillo, and our devoted fans across the United States,” Keith Kinsey, Portillo's CEO, said in a statement. “The Portillo’s team looks forward to celebrating this milestone with our customers.”

Portillo's has two restaurants in Chicago: one in River North at 100 W. Ontario St. and a newer one at 520 W. Taylor St. in the South Loop.

Its double-layer chocolate cakes are baked every morning before being frosted with chocolate icing. The cakes are also used in Portillo's popular cake shakes. A slice of Portillo's chocolate cake normally costs $3.09.

While the 54-cent promo will last only one day, Portillo's reminds customers that they can sign up to receive a free slice of chocolate cake on their birthday.
