BUCKTOWN — The weekly community meal event Soup & Bread ends its winter season at the Hideout this Wednesday night and aims to raise a few more thousand dollars from supporters to reach a $10,000 fundraising goal.

Set for 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1354 W. Wabansia Ave., the pay-what-you-can seasonal gathering has been raising money for Chicago food pantries and hunger-relief organizations all winter.

Since launching its eighth season this past January with a theme of "sanctuary," the weekly meal event — featuring donated soup from area chefs and bread — has raised $8,300, organizer Martha Bayne posted on the Soup & Bread blog.

Wednesday's meal will serve soup by Geef Fellows (Bad Hunter); Allison Scott (Stock Cafe); Elliott Beier (Owen & Engine); Efren Candelaria (Sobremesa Supper Club); Zeeshan Shah (The Biscuit Man); Dana Bassett (ACRE: Artists Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions); Brandon Joldersma (Virtue Cider) and another chef to-be-announced from Local Foods.

In addition to soup, baked goods will be available at an end-of-the-soup-season bake sale (those interested in donating cookies, brownies, or a pie can send an email), along with copies of the Soup & Bread Cookbook, for $20.

To supplement the soup, bread will be donated by Publican Quality Bread. And Piece Brewery and Pizzeria has chipped in pies as well.

"We are so heartened by the support we’ve seen over this long, cruel winter and we hope to see you one last time before we have to find something else to do on Wednesday nights for a while," Bayne wrote.
