EDGEWATER — A police SWAT unit descended upon an Edgewater home Thursday night after getting a call about a man with a gun, according to police.
Around 6:15 p.m., police responded to the situation in the 5600 block of North Magnolia Avenue — a mainly residential block of single family homes and apartment buildings between Ridge and Hollywood avenues, both busy commuter routes.
Officers blocked those streets off for several hours while the incident unfolded.
Around 9 p.m., the adult man, who was alone in the residence, surrendered, police said. His age was not immediately available, Officer Laura Amezaga said.
He was taken to Weiss Hospital for evaluation, and no injuries were reported, police said.
Video taken by neighbor Danny Beers, who lives nearby, showed tactical officers entering the apartment building at 5636 N. Magnolia Ave. with guns drawn.
Another video showed police leading what appeared to be a white man from inside the building into a police vehicle.
Beers said he had just returned home from a jog when police began arriving at the scene and roping off the area with crime tape.
He and his neighbor tuned into the police scanner to see what was going on, until an officer from the ground yelled up to him to get away from his second story window and hide in his bathroom.
"Then I heard SWAT coming up the stairs of my building," Beers told DNAinfo. He guessed that "they were looking for the best vantage point to stage a sniper."
Beers said police began setting up on the third floor when around 8:15 p.m. he overheard police say "it was all over."
Quickly, Beers ran back to his window and saw the man being led out by police.
