COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man who was shot four times in Englewood last weekend was able to tell police, "Jamal shot me; Jamal shot me," shortly before dying, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Jamal Donerson, 24, now faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder after the Saturday night shooting that left 23-year-old Ishmael Jackson dead and a 27-year-old man wounded.

The victims were walking in an alley in the 5600 block of South Elizabeth Street about 10:45 p.m. Saturday when they passed Donerson's home, Assistant State's Attorney Sheila York said during Tuesday's bond hearing.

Both men knew Donerson from the neighborhood, prosecutors said.

Donerson is accused of leaving his house, pulling a gun and firing multiple shots toward the victims. Prosecutors did not offer a motive Tuesday.

Jackson was shot four times in his chest, back and leg, York said. He collapsed in a nearby yard and died at Stroger Hospital about 11:50 p.m., authorities said — but not before telling police, "Jamal shot me, Jamal shot me."

The 27-year-old victim was shot in his neck, prosecutors said. He ran off to a nearby barbershop, where a witness called 911 and tried to stop his bleeding with a towel. The victim also told the witness that Jamal Donerson shot him, York said.

Police on patrol in the neighborhood heard the shots and responded quickly, according to prosecutors. As police approached Donerson's house, he put his hands in the air, admitted he shot two people and told police where to find his gun, York said.

Officers found 10 shell casings on the scene. Preliminary testing revealed the shells to be a match to Donerson's gun, prosecutors said.

Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. on Tuesday denied Donerson bail.
