ANDERSONVILLE — As Amazon celebrates the grand opening of its first brick-and-mortar shop in Lakeview, neighborhood bookstores are hoping community members will still shop local.

Women & Children First bookstore, 5233 N. Clark St., renewed its call for readers to keep supporting the businesses they've depended on for decades in a popular post on Facebook Tuesday.

"Support the community you want to see thriving far into the future," said the post, which has been shared nearly 300 times already.

The independent bookstore has been open for 37 years, according to the post.

Chicago Review of Books, a year-old independent literary journal with a fiery streak, also spoke out against the Amazon opening Tuesday. The site shared a list of 12 bookstores to visit instead of the newly opened Amazon Books.

The list is based on a Facebook post written by Chicago author Rebecca Makkai on Monday.

"Please show our indies love this week," Makkai wrote. "They always need it, but now more than ever."
