LINCOLN PARK — Police are investigating a rape that took place shortly after midnight Sunday in the 1900 block of North Orchard Street as a woman tried to enter a home.

Police issued a community alert Sunday, passed along by 43rd Ward Ald. Michele Smith.

A woman was trying to go into a home about midnight when a man walked up, pulled out a knife and sexually assaulted her, according to the alert.

The man then took items from the woman and ran off, the alert said.

Local residents were rattled Sunday, even as police investigated on the block.

Bryan Young said "the shock of it happening on our block," had neighbors "reassessing safety."

A series of previously scheduled community meetings on public safety will be held this week: Monday at New Life Church, 1110 W. Lill St.; Tuesday at Latin School, 59 W. North Ave; and Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 2050 N. Fremont St., all at 6 p.m.

Smith has made a  community survey  available before the meetings.

Anyone with more information on the attack is asked to call detectives at 312-747-8380.
