DOWNTOWN — You might be able to get ashes for Ash Wednesday during your commute into work.
Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, when Christians get ready for Easter. Though it is primarily a Catholic practice, many other Christians also observe it.
Practitioners mostly go to church to get ashes on their forehead in the shape of the cross. In the Catholic faith, the priest administering the ashes typically says, “Remember you are dust, and to dust you will return.”
Cardinal Blase Cupich, head of the Archdiocese of Chicago, will celebrate Ash Wednesday with an 8 a.m. mass at Holy Name Cathedral, 730 N. Wabash Ave.
Several religious organizations will take the ashes to people commuting in the morning and evening, while others will also set up in Daley Plaza and outside businesses.
